One man’s trash is one Main Street shop’s treasure.
Earth Shop, located at the corner of Main and College Avenue, is a social enterprise store dedicated to reusing and repurposing unwanted items.
The brainchild of director Cynthia Ryan, Earth Shop is a place where people can learn upcycling projects, buy secondhand items and purchase products by local artisans. “There are people who are suffering with surplus,” Ryan said. “They’re uncertain about what to do when they have no use for their items. People like to know how their belongings can benefit others.”
Earth Shop opened in September. Ryan said the building — formerly the home of a books and collectibles store — was in pretty bad shape and required some upcycling of its own. With the help of architect Chris Wiebe, Earth Shop has been fixed up, it’s bright green frontage and interesting incorporation of chain link fence is quite eye-catching from the street.
