News Release Winnipeg Police Service

Fraud Prevention Month

March is Fraud Prevention Month, and in conjunction with other agencies from the community, the Winnipeg Police Service will be participating in events to help educate citizens on how they can protect themselves from fraud.

These events include:

  • Fraud café– March 12, 10:00 am to 9:00 pm, at St. Vital Centre. This event is free and open to the public. It features members of the Manitoba Financial Services Agency, the Better Business Bureau of Manitoba, and the Winnipeg Police Service’s Financial Crime Unit.
  • Sixth Annual “Shred It” Event– March 28, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, at St. Vital Centre in the parking lot outside Silver City and CF Polo Park in the South parking lot facing Portage Avenue. A maximum of two bags or boxes per person for this FREE event, please.

This year the Winnipeg Police Service has created a video about the use of prepaid gift cards in mass market scams.

Prepaid gift cards are becoming the preferred payment method in scams as they are easy to use, can be purchased almost anywhere, can be redeemed with just the code on the back, and can be resold for actual money.
